Accountability – Evaluation methods are common place in business, finance, manufacturing, and equally applicable to the production of snow. More than ever, today’s economics demand a streamlined practice of business management. Snowmaking has evolved from short term decisions (“it’s cold…turn it on”), toward the planning and investment process that has sustained profitable companies. Timing is appropriate to utilize analytical systems which measure the probability of resourceful snowmaking. Then, options are defined for cost-effective, timely decisions.
Environment – Significant resources of water and energy are used in the snowmaking process. To purchase “Green” energy, and then leave the lights on and faucet running is environmental hypocrisy. Conservation plays a critical role in the ecological stewardship of Sustainable Slopes. To establish and improve the efficiencies of snowmaking production is our responsibility to practice what we preach.
Information Management – Ski resorts monitor and evaluate the actions of many departments, then make choices for cost-effective changes. Some examples are; yield per skier visit, uphill lift capacity and net promoter scores. The efficiencies and production information of snowmaking must also be measured and managed.
Profits – Resource monitoring and evaluation is needed to insure the stockholders that management practices are succeeding within the expected range of results. If not, then adaptive management decisions can be made to improve the situation.
Retention – Snow is the most critical need to the ski industry. Maximum, timely coverage of snow provides the foundation for the best quality experience. This promotes retention, creating higher revenues and the best ROI for stockholders. To increase revenue requires a higher frequency rate of visits. This is accomplished with a quality experience whose foundation is snow.
Government / Energy Company Incentives – Several energy management programs offer incentives for quantifiable improvements. Eligibility for these opportunities requires tangible evidence of efficiency improvements. This is accomplished with data collection and documentation of snowmaking operations.
